This is the first year-end for my business, how do I hire a Bookkeeper or Accountant?

Updated: Jul 13, 2022

Here are my favourite 5 places to find a bookkeeper or Accountat:

  1. Talk to people you know who own businesses: they will likely have a Bookkeeper or Accountant they like and are willing to recommend.

  2. LinkedIn: it's very easy to search for Bookkeepers and Accountants in your area and meet people you otherwise would not have the opportunity to meet. LinkedIn.com

  3. QuickBooks Pro Accountant: These bookkeepers and Accountant know QuickBooks and will answer all those pesky questions you can't. https://quickbooks.intuit.com/ca/find-an-accountant/

  4. Certified Professional Bookkeepers of Canada organization (CPB Canada): Certified Bookkeepers and Accountants advertise on this website. You can also post your own advertisement as well. https://cpbcan.ca/

  5. Recruiting websites: I've used Indeed which is a popular recruiting website but also, don't overlook Craigslist and Kijiji, all great options. https://www.kijiji.ca/b-accounting-management-jobs/british-columbia/c58l9007

If you don't know what type of questions to ask a prospective Bookkeeper or Accountant, start with these:

  • How long have you been in business?

  • What type of clients do you take on? (Depending on your company, you may need industry specific Bookkeepers or Accountants)

  • What is your rate and what items are included in that price? What tasks will be an extra cost?

  • Can you provide me with a quote?

  • Do you have a reference from your current clients?

  • What is your professional designation?
